Artificial Intelligence

Yesterday, I stumbled upon a very interesting article published by BBC News. The article, titled Stephen Hawking warns artificial intelligence could end mankind, briefly introduced what artificial intelligence is and how several professors and scientists feel about such technologies. One artificial intelligence technology, or AI, mentioned in the article was the Cleverbot, a software designed to converse and chat like a human. The Cleverbot scored high in the Turing test, tricking most participants into thinking they were talking to a human. Stephen Hawking warns us against AI technology, saying "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race" (Hawking, 2014). He also reminds us that humans are limited to competing with AI technologies due to our slow rate of biological evolution. Hawking does believe that AI technology can be useful, but needs to be highly monitored. Oppositely, Rollo Carpenter, the creator of the Cleverbot, believes that humans will have the ability to control technology for a long time. He says, "I believe we will remain in charge of the technology for a decently long time and the potential of it to solve many of the world problems will be realised," (Carpenter, 2014). After much thought and deliberation, I agree with Hawking. I think that it is critical for us to monitor AI technology. The capacity of the technology is amazing, but the consequences of the technology could easily surpass the benefits if we are not careful.

  1. Artificial Intelligence is something that people should be scared of in my opinion. Technology and software is starting to become human. It is not on our level just yet, but in just years it will be. We have it talking like a human being and walking like a human being, and doing specialized task on their own just like humans. When this technology gets the know-how to think and act on its own and make decisions, this is when we will be in trouble. We are trying so hard to redo the human race that i do not think we are too sure of the benefits vs the consequences. When technology gets the ability to think, i have no idea what the outcome will be, but i cant imagine it would be good. Its one of those things that if the human brain tried to think about, you cannot come to a logical solution because its something we have never seen before.

  2. I agree with Hawking on this topic of Artificial Intelligence as well. I believe that this dire need from society, however, is what will be the root cause of the end of mankind. The over-developed need to know more, if that's what one would call it. In the past decade society has seemed to take off rapidly to the point that we expect something new to come out every couple of months. Pushing artificial intelligence from something simple as "Cleverbot," to becoming an actual interactive robot in the near future is a disturbing thought. I just personally want to know when technology will of had enough "what if's?" and just steadily start improving the things that they already have developed.

  3. I think artificial Intelligence is something that we can benefit from, but we should still be very wary of what it is capable of. To create something that is smarter than us and that we can never fully understand just spells out Trouble. Hawking, a man who is dependent on artificial intelligence probably knows more than the rest of us do. Someone who is forced to live with everyday could probably give us a better understanding. Creating a superior creature s just asking to be put at the bottom of the food chain. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but just because you can create something, doesn't mean that you should.
